What is your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part of my job is the fact that I get to work across so many different facets of a project. Experiential marketing and events can really run the gamut, one day I could be developing an idea for turning a gas station into a 90s inspired hype kid fashion destination and the next day I’m researching emerging female creators for a limited edition print magazine that we may be developing for a project. I also love that I work with a small enough team that everyones ideas are often considered and heard.

Which women inspire you the most and why?

I’ve been lucky enough to have some incredible women in my life. From both my grandmothers, who really were such strong matriarchs in my family. My mother’s mother was a life long teacher, in the classroom and out, growing up she made me want to be a teacher and value the importance of education.  My own mom was really quite inspirational in that she is the type of person that does not deal with anyone’s shit. With age, I’ve gotten better with demanding more for myself and not feeling bad about it. She definitely inspired that, even if it was at my expense! lol… Lastly, any woman that is creating a life for themselves on their own terms. I think in 2019 there are so many ways to express yourself, your passion, build a career, live your life, etc. that any woman in my opinion that is doing it their way and ok with figuring it out along the way, bc we are always growing, is incredibly inspiring to me. Fortunately, I have so many women around me that are doing just that, whether it’s my boss who is a badass entrepreneur, wife, and mom or a good friend who is one of the most brilliant writers I know and who also happens to be a queer black woman that unapologetically dedicates her work to always amplifying the voices of those that have not been seen. It’s really an exciting time to be a woman and for me, especially a WOC. I’m finally seeing so many women and especially those that look like me that are doing amazing work and that visibility makes me feel like so much is possible.

What’s your advice to women trying to make an impact in their career?

Impact doesnt come without sacrifice. That’s what I’ve learned. If we want to have a career that is impactful, whether that is on the larger culture or within our own lives, it’s most likely going to take time, so be ok with that and it is most likely going to demand a lot of you, so be ok with that too.

First thing you do when you wake up, is?

Pray

Last thing you do before you go to sleep, is?

Pray and take one long deep breath

What will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you?

I think to continue to push boundaries around a woman’s place and for women to be the ones to lead those conversations.

What are the best decisions that you have made in your career thus far?

Quitting the previous job that I had in health care two years ago and moving to California to dive head first into entertainment. I’ve known for a long time my heart wasn’t in my previous work. Making the change has been one of the most challenging things I’ve done, but also the most rewarding. I’ve grown so much as an individual since then. It’s been really difficult at times and I still don’t have it all figured out but I’m becoming ok with the journey.

What are the worst?

Going with what’s safe. I’ll never make that decision again.

What is your self-care routine?

Ahh.. oh man so many!! I’ve recently discovered the joy of a giving myself a Gua Sha facial courtesy of the holistic beauty guru, Britta Plug. I love face oils!! They make me glow! Doing this on a Saturday night in my robe while watching a film with my fiance makes me feel soo good. In the mornings, I love preparing myself a morning shake full of delicious fruits & veggies. I was an athlete growing up, playing highly competitive basketball for most of my teenage years, so I love to exercise. Living in LA is great as there are so many ways to be active and there are so many great boutique gyms with training geared to whatever you want. Lastly, this may sound weird, but getting up on the weekend and hitting up the grocery store to food shop is really therapeutic to me. 🙂
