We had the great fortune of sitting down with NIKKI BOSTWICK, FOUNDER & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, THE FULLEST, a publication built on pop culture, wellness, finances, politics and more (basically everything that you want to read about). Nikki is a force to be reckoned with – running a busy household with a toddler, spearheading multiple burgeoning business(ES) – in addition to The Fullest, make sure to check out her podcast Morning Matcha, she has just recently launched the most delicious saffron latte (a must buy). Take notes everyone.

What are your go-to wellness travel essentials?

I never wear makeup on the plane because I somehow end up breaking out- I haven’t pinpointed exactly why but I noticed a face mist and some face oil are all I need on travel days to keep my skin hydrated and keep it from getting clogged up. Speaking of face oil, it is my number one skin essential whether I am traveling or at home- I always have my face oil with me. I also bring essential oils to help us sleep soundly. We also love requesting a humidifier from our hotels, again because it helps keep our skin hydrated and we wake up more refreshed!

Check bags or carry-on?

With a kid it’s a check bag kind of lifestyle!

What are your top 3 Carry-On items you can’t travel without?

I bring our saffron latte wellness blend with me because It makes me feel nourished when I drink it as my morning “breakfast” before I start my day- while traveling or not. Another must – antibacterial wipes! We like the natural kind so it doesn’t strip our skin from its natural microbiome. Whole Foods sells a good lavender scented one.

Last trip you took?

Seattle to visit my inlaws! We love the North West!

What do you wear when you fly?

I go as comfortable as possible- usually in my cashmere jumper, no bra, some sort of cover-up and sneakers or sandals.

Best airline snack or meal?

I avoid all airline food even when in First Class. i usually grab a bag of pistachios and water at one of the counters before boarding the plane so I can avoid the service altogether.

How do you avoid jet lag?

With a 10 month old, my sleep cycle has been pretty crazy so I don’t experience jet lag because that is now my constant state of mind! But it is nice to try and stay up as best you can the first day and acclimate to your new time zone by staying awake until its bedtime in your new timezone.

Favorite city?

London!

Kindle, iPad or book?

A real book all the way

How do you practice sustainability on the go?

I am horrible at it but one think I do as part of my lifestyle is sticking to mainly plant based foods and that is definitely the most simple way for me to stay eco friendly.

What are your favorite Eco-Friendly Products to travel with?

I like to request a bathtub and bring bath salts with me and love a zinc-based sunscreen (better for the reefs to avoid using all those chemicals).

The sound of a baby in the midst of teething, the sleepless nights, and the reaching-for-anything-around-me-for-comfort is something that all moms encounter at some point. That’s why we were so excited to sit down with the one part of the rising stars of Doddle & Co, Nicki Radzely to learn more about how she manages a thriving business and a busy household.

Doddle & Co was created by a vision that things can be easier. All of their tools and tricks we rely on as parents can be approached differently. Soothing babies and parents, our goal has been simple from the start: To bring you products that make the day-to-day realities of parenting easier. That’s right. That’s it. (say hello to some of our favorite pacifiers and teethers on the market!)

Do you have any beauty shortcuts that mom’s need to know about?

Eyelashes and Aquaphor. If you always have eyelashes on, it’s like built-in mascara but better and Aquaphor is always on hand, so add it to your lips and get your day started!

Everyone has that ritual that makes them feel confident and pulled together, what’s yours?

Fragrance. I could be wearing or doing absolutely anything, from a big meeting to a quick grocery shop and fragrance always makes me feel like my best self. I tend to wear Hermès as my daily go-to. But I love Byredo, Gypsy Water too! The list goes on and I use fragrance like a fashion accessory.

Do you have any first-time mom advice?

Everyone always say, “it goes so fast” but my advice would be that when you have a baby, remember that a year from that beautiful day, your baby will most likely be walking, talking and eating on their first birthday, so when people say to enjoy it, just realize that it is impossible not to.

What beauty product can you not live without?

Pore minimizer, a good highlighter and radiant skin by Goldfaden MD!

How do you find balance?

I don’t. I think it’s all a myth. I just find the joy in the imbalance. I laugh almost about everything and I barely take anything so seriously that a joke can’t be made. This is all impossible, so just roll with it.. nothing is or should be so perfect that you can’t find lightness in it.

How do you de-stress?

I clean my house, cook a big meal for my family and I light candles after everyone is to bed. But really my secret is music. It’s my medicine. All of this in one day and you pretty much have a rebuilt, re-invigorated, Nicki.

Travel. Air travel, specifically. Every time you board a plane, you’re exposed to stale, crazy-dry, recirculated air, so even if you’re only taking an hour-long flight (lucky!), you end up with a significantly moisture-sapped, duller complexion when you land. And that’s not accounting for what happens on your actual vacation: using strange hotel beauty products, skin experiencing different water, forgetting your favorite sunscreen, and eating different foods.

We sat down with Dr. G to understand just exactly what happens to our skin and how to combat Jet leg from sinking in while we travel.

Does skin get ‘jet lagged’? How does it manifest?

Jet lag manifests itself in many different ways, both physical and mental. Think fatigue, bloating, insomnia, irritability, digestive issues, breakouts and general stress.

Jet lag, or desynchronosis, is a temporary circadian rhythm disorder that often occurs when a person travels across time zones. The body’s internal clock is disrupted, and major symptoms include insomnia, fatigue, bloating, anxiety, malaise, and emotional disturbances.

When a traveler crosses a few time zones, the body uses natural cues like sunlight and an eating schedule to try and acclimate to the appropriate time. But because travel is disorienting for the physical body, it can take a few days before all the natural processes even out and become normalized.

Jet lag is usually worse when moving from west to east because travelers lose hours of their day.

Why does skin suffer? Is the increased cortisol combined with reduced hydration for example?

Stressful security checks, unhealthy airport food options, omnipresent air conditioning, cabin pressure and dry air can wreak havoc on the most resilient complexions. Dehydration and bacteria are major factors here. If you’re prone to breakouts, touching bathroom doors and tray tables (full of germs) and then touching or rubbing your face can exacerbate acne, let alone make you sick. Always a good idea to pack antibacterial wipes and wipe down the areas you will be touching. If you feel ill before travel you may want to wear a mask to protect yourself and those around you.

If you choose to sleep on a flight (or in the airport) it’s likely not high quality zzz’s. Rest is incredibly important for cell turnover and skin recovery—in fact, regeneration happens three times as fast while asleep.

Are there any ways we can prevent it before hand? Or lessen its impact during flight or afterwards?

Pre-flight:

A pre-trip plan is crucial when it comes to preventing jetlag. If time permits you can start the week before travel by starting to wake up a few hours earlier every day to get your body used to another time zone. This is probably best for time zones, which will be many hours ahead. If you choose to do this, use a light to stimulate your brain/melatonin levels when waking (as the sun will not be up yet).  Being hydrated before your flight is crucial. Try drinking a hydration multiplier powder to increase internal hydration. Going makeup free on the flight is also a good idea but make sure you are wearing an antipollution serum (Brightening Elixir) and heavy moisturizer or nourishing oil (Fleuressence Botanical Oil) to lock in moisture.

Inflight:

Drink plenty of fluids (no alcohol or caffeine as they dehydrate the body and skin).  Try and rest and or sleep. Pack earplugs and a sleep mask to create a relaxing sleep environment.

Post Flight:

Wash your face very well and try a gentle peel. Our Fresh A Peel (lactic acid peel) will obliterate any dry skin or bacteria that may have happened as a result of air travel. Follow with a hydrating oil or rich night cream.

If possible, try to book a flight that lands later in the evening at your final destination. Your goal is to basically get to sleep, as this is the best way to acclimate to a new time zone. If you arrive during the day, a light workout or walk outside in the sunlight will help set your internal clock on the time zone.
