Pollution is a daily reality for most of us. Whether from external or internal sources, we must protect ourselves. A 360 degree approach to overall health includes pollution protectio9n and repair.

Pollution + your skin + and aging

Pollution releases microscopic particles or free radicals that can go deep into the skin and cause damage to otherwise healthy cells. The outcome is loss of elasticity (wrinkles and sagging) and Hyperpigmentation (dark spots). Pollution can cause uneven skin tone, dehydration, dryness, dark spots, expedited aging, wrinkles, sagging and a deterioration of collagen

Protect + Shield with Lifestyle choices

First and foremost always wear an SPF! Look for anti-oxidant ingredients as they fight free radicals. A few of the most studied and effective anti-oxidants are Red Tea, Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Japonica flowers, Water Cress Sprouts, Retinol and Resveratrol. We have a serum launching very soon that incorporates Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin B- specifically for polluted skin protection! Lucky for us Dr.G recently introduced Brightening Elixir– an anti-pollution serum that contains Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin B and Vitamin E!

The Sun is the number one environmental damage for skin. Both UVA/UVB rays are harmful. Protect yourself by wearing a hat and sunglasses. Shielding your skin, head and eyes can help with sun damage and pollution-based aging. Always wash you face to remove the residue and makeup from the day. Remember all the pollution from car exhaust, factories and the weak ozone layer sits on the skin!

Eating healthy can also reduce pollution effects on the skin and the body. Eat a diet high in anti-oxidant rich foods such as leafy greens and berries and foods high in essential fatty acids (salmon and almonds). Stay away form foods that can encourage and cause Glycation. The Glycation process, which is basically, sugars (from food and alcohol) breaking down the collagen fibers in the skin and therefore speeding up the aging process. Foods that feed Glycation and cause inflammation in the body and the skin are carbohydrates, fried foods, sugar, fatty meats and alcohol.

Repair the damage

The best way to repair environmentally damaged skin is to introduce an anti-pollution based skin care regimen- Exfoliate (remove the dead and polluted skin cells), cleanse, treat (serum), seal (moisturizer) and protect (SPF).

Exfoliation is the best method for ridding pores of pollutants. Scrubs can get into the pores and clean them while also removing dead skin cells, bacteria and prior damage. Chemical peels are also a terrific way to exfoliate and remove damaged skin cells.

The most potent and highest regarded pollution fighting ingredients are: Red Tea, Ferulic Acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Retinol and Resveratrol. Look for these in serums and moisturizers.

A few healthy choices can save you skin and keep you looking youthful and healthy for years to come!

In the fight against aging, one of the most important areas of the body to pay attention to is the neck. The neck is often ignored and left out of the daily anti-aging regimen, resulting in crapey, sagging and dehydrated skin. The neck skin is not attached to any bones, and therefore will be one of the first areas to display the pull of gravity. Luckily there are many options to correct and prevent neck aging.

How to fight it

Always use a neck cream that contains anti-aging ingredients. When choosing a neck cream look for peptides, hydrating lightweight oils, and ingredients that offer brightening and DNA repair. Wearing an SPF on the neck and chest area is a must everyday. We also look down a lot (at our computers and phones), which causes more wrinkles. Try and place your computer higher up on your desk and hold your phone up when texting or reading. Always stand up straight as good posture can help prevent wrinkles.

Other options

While most doctors will admit that topical skincare won’t entirely cure the neck area, it definitely will help. Plant based stem cells can aid in collagen and elastin encouragement, DNA repair, brightening, skin thickening and hydration. There is also a lot of chatter about lasers and the neck. Lasers will probably never take the place of actual surgery or a ‘lift’, but they can help the surface appearance of the neck. However, lasers are pricey and not guaranteed for everyone.Botox injections are another option but starting them early is the key to success. Botox paralyzes the muscle and will not allow neck muscles to contract and sag, so starting before that happens is imperative. Early to mid 30’s is recommended start age.A neck lift can be beneficial for some who are not ready to take the leap into a full facelift. Also, pricey and still ‘real’ surgery, this may not be the best choice for some.

Ultimately we are all aging; there is no way to stop it. Fortunately there are many options to fight aging and to stay looking youthful longer. The most important thing is how you feel inside because that is where the true beauty comes from. If you’re still not sure where to start, invest in a topical neck cream, (like our Lifting Neck Cream) wear sunscreen and hold your head up high.

Why is it so important to take proper care of your skin?

“First and foremost for health purposes. Skin cancer can be fatal if not detected early and treated. In today’s world with all we know about healthy lifestyle, exercise and proper skincare, it is possible to look youthful and healthy as we age. While it is important to take care of the skin from the outside in, it is equally important to take care of it from the inside out. Healthy skin begins inside. A lifestyle that consists of fresh vegetable, fruits, lean protein and essential fats will only help skin to look healthier.” Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden

Is there ever a circumstance where topical skincare products takes less priority than surgical/non-surgical treatments?

“In cosmetic cases this is a personal preference. For example severe sun damage may be helped quicker with a series of lasers than just using skincare and the same goes for combating fine lines and wrinkles (topical fillers such as Hyaluronic Acid vs. Injections). Every surgical or non surgical treatment comes with consequences and risks which need to also be taken into account. However, yes there are some skin issues that need more treatment than solely skincare products.” Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden

If a woman wants to look her best forever what are your three tips for doing so?

“Exfoliate often, wear SPF everyday and hydrate the skin. From our core collection the use of Doctors Scrub a few times a week will suffice for exfoliation purposes. Try Sun Visor SPF30 for daily protection and Vital Boost for overall even skin tone and hydration.” Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden

How much is biological and how much is care when it comes to ageing?

“Everyone is going to age-we cannot stop that. However with the right type of skincare treatments and products the appearance of the signs of aging will be diminished. For example collagen and elastin start to breakdown as we age but using products that encourage collagen production, we can attain the effects and look more youthful.”Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden

Do you think skincare, non-invasive beauty treatments and surgery can work in tandem beautifully?

“Absolutely. This is a personal choice for the patient but yes it can. There is a fine line in not overdoing it but that can be accomplished with open communication with your doctor and a plan.” Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden

If there was one skin-saving rule we should follow what would you recommend?

“Wear sunscreen.” Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden
